International Women’s Day is celebrated every year on March 8th. It is a day to honor the social, economic, and political achievements of women. The idea of celebrating a day dedicated to women emerged during the era of rapid industrialization when harsh working conditions prevailed. On March 8, 1857, textile workers in New York held public demonstrations protesting against poor working conditions and low wages.
Today, the position of women in society is still far from equal to that of men. Discrimination and violence exist not only in parts of the world where women’s fundamental human rights are systematically violated, but also in developed democracies. Therefore, awareness is persistently promoted that equality has no alternative and that any discrimination is absolutely unacceptable.
We wish all female students and staff of the University a Happy International Women’s Day.
