“There is a city dear to every heart, there is one divine Croatian.”
Vukovar City Day marks the day when Vukovar was granted the status of a free royal city, celebrated on May 3rd (Article 5 of the Statute of the City of Vukovar).
By enacting the Statute of the City of Vukovar, municipal leaders decided that May 3rd should be celebrated as Vukovar City Day, as it coincides with the feast day of Saints Philip (Sveti Filip) and James (Sveti Jakov) in the church calendar. The cathedral in Vukovar is named after these two saints, who have been the city’s patrons since 1723, when the construction of the Church of St. Philip and St. James began.
We wish all residents a happy City Day.
