On 21st November 2025, the University of Applied Scinces “Lavoslav Ružička” in Vukovar organized a professional lecture aimed at raising awareness about the importance of preventive healthcare for men, particularly in the context of urological malignancies. The lecture was delivered by distinguished experts in the field of urology: mr. sc. Tomislav Kalem, MD, urology specialist, and Assist. Prof. dr. sc. Ivan Radoja, MD, urology specialist and subspecialist in neurourology and urodynamics. They presented students, faculty members, and the interested public with current insights into risk factors, symptomatology, and modern diagnostic and treatment methods for prostate and testicular cancer.

It was emphasized that testicular cancer most commonly occurs in younger men, while prostate cancer is predominant among men over the age of 50. The experts highlighted that early examination is crucial for successful therapeutic outcomes, with timely detection of the disease resulting in cure rates higher than 95%. In this context, the importance of educating young men about the habit of regular self-examination, as well as reducing the stigma associated with urological check-ups, was strongly underscored.

Significant risk factors for the development of urological malignancies include positive family history and genetic predisposition, while environmental factors such as diet, smoking, and alcohol consumption were assessed as potentially contributing but not decisive. The lecture also presented advances in therapy, with particular emphasis on the increasing use of robotic surgery, which enables greater procedural precision, reduced risk of complications, and faster patient recovery.

Despite high cure rates, Croatia still records a considerable share of mortality related to prostate cancer, which is attributed to insufficient health awareness and delays in seeking medical attention.

In conclusion, the lecture highlighted the necessity of early symptom recognition, timely diagnostic procedures, and continuous health education as key factors in improving men’s health and reducing mortality from urological diseases.
